In 1881, the town of Coppell, Texas was founded by settlers. The town grew quickly and in 1907, it had a post office. In 1916, the first gun store in Coppell opened. Coppell, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Coppell were farmers who arrived in 1836 by wagon train from Illinois. They named their land "Cedar Bluff," after Cedar Creek which they crossed on their way to Texas. By 1850, the population had grown to over 100 people and the town wasType A incorporated on February 2, 1851 under the name of Cedar Rapids. In 1860, when Hudspeth County was organized into counties, Cedar Rapids became part of Humble County and had no change in its political affiliation until it joined with Houston in 1924. In 1907, while working as an engineer for Southern Pacific Railroad Company's Western Branch Line near Wichita Falls, Texan Johnnie Weldon discovered oil reserves within Hudspeth County and decided to drill for oil there himself instead of waiting for approval from Southern Pacific managers in San Francisco. On October 13th 1907 he leased land north of Coppell from Gulf Oil Corporation for $2 per acre (the first lease ever sold by Gulf). Weldon drilled three wells at "Novelty No." and produced gas that was used to power local businesses up until 1943 when production stopped because of World War II gasoline rationing. In 1946 Weldon sold his interest in the company to Gulf Oil Corporation's subsidiary Houston Petroleum Company which operated it until 1978 when it merged with Field Energy Company Incorporated which owned all remaining interests including offshore drilling rights off coast of Louisiana and Mississippi! Today (2018), Coppell still boasts some impressiveatial landmarks such as two highly visible high-mast antennas on I-10 just outside town limits; a restored downtown district with several restaurants; a popular golf course called Biloxi Bayou Course; home field advantage for many high school sports teams including football (Houston Astros), basketball (Houston Rockets), baseball (Houston Oilers) and tennis (Biloxi Bayou Tennis Club).
