Coppell is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,386 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Coppell was Capt. William Hogg who arrived on July 4, 1836 with his family and seven others. Captain Hogg's land grant included 640 acres (253 hectares). In 1839 Colonel John Myrick founded Myrickville which later became Coppell. In 1851 Drury Sieving built a log cabin on the site of today's Ladd Library after spending two years traveling through Central Texas searching for a quarry for building stones to build the courthouse in Austin. In 1865 The Telegraph Company established its headquarters here; it moved out in 1916 to 801 North Lamar Boulevard near downtown Austin before returning to this location in 1984. On December 20, 1886, Wm Denton & Son organized as the Denton Cottonseed Oil Company and began production of cottonseed oil from what is now the University of Texas at Austin campus.. This company evolved into Texaco which merged with ConocoPhillips in 2003 to become ExxonMobil . Later that year $1 million was invested by banker Edward Mims Jr., founder and president of Mims Properties Incorporated – one of Coppell's most prominent residents – into local civic improvements such as an improved street system, new schools and more than 50 businesses that were incorporated into what are now Williamson Elementary School (1948), First Baptist Church (1957), Coppel High School (1983), Hillcrest Apartments (1986), USO/Halliburton Barracks Annex (1998) and MidwayUSA Incorporation(2004). The development also included more than 100 residential units called "Midway Towers" across two blocks from Ladd Library/First Baptist Church/USO/Halliburton Barracks Annex (). The town of Coppell, Texas was founded in 1879 by James Fenton and his wife Anna. The town had a population of around 150 people when it was first established. It rapidly grew, and by 1888 the population had reached 2,500 people. By 1920, the population had swollen to 5,000 people, and in 1928 it reached 10,000 people. In the 1930s, Coppell became an important stop on the Chisholm Trail. The town was also home to two major companies that made equipment for war: Bechtel Corporation and Armour & Company. During World War II, Coppell played a key role in the war effort. The city government constructed several military airfields within its boundaries; these airports were used for bomber training and fighters during World War II. In 1945, after Japan's surrender, Coppell became part of United States Occupation Zone (USOZ). From 1946 until 1949, it was under Japanese rule; however, this period is generally considered to be local history because no legal changes took place within the city limits during that time frame. In 1951-1953 (the early years of the Eisenhower administration), Coppell experienced rapid growth as a result of development initiatives led by Mayor John Witherspoon Sr.. These projects included construction of new streets and sidewalks as well as remodeling of many existing buildings including churches and factories. Additionally, numerous small businesses were brought into business with marketing services being provided through Witherspoon's foundation called "The Voice". In 1957-1959 (the height of Ike's presidency), Mayor Witherspoon spearheaded another wave of development which resulted in the construction of more than 100 new homes throughout downtownCoppell - one third of all building permits issued in TX during that time frame! This type of redevelopment helped spur economic growth which continued into the late 1960s when violence began erupting throughout Texas cities due to inner-city poverty levels exacerbated by American racism towards African Americans living within white neighborhoods - violence which would eventually lead to integrate those communities over time. Today Coppell is known for its retail center called "The Marketplace" located at I-35E & Beltway 8th Street just outside downtown; its beautiful old brick courthouse located on Main Street between Elm Street and Houston Street; as well as its vibrant arts scene with shows happening every night at The Foundry Center located east on Main Street adjacent to State Fair Park across from City Hall; along with many other cultural attractions enjoyed by locals or visitors alike year round!
