Coppell is a small town in the Texas Hill Country. It was founded in 1853 by John Coppell and his family. The original community was located on the north side of County Road 9, just east of present-day US 281. A post office was established in 1854, and a school was built in 1857. The population of Coppell increased rapidly during the early 1800s due to the influx of settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee. By 1850, there were 12 taverns and 123 residences in Coppell. The growth of Coppell stopped after a fire destroyed most of the buildings in 1871. A new community developed on the south side of County Road 9 between 1902 and 1904, which became known as "Buchanan". Some residents removed to Buchanan because it had more water resources than their original village on the north side of County Road 9. The population of Buchanan decreased after World War I because many people left for jobs in Dallas or San Antonio. In 1948, Coppell voted to become an unincorporated community within Johnson County; this change occurred because many residents wanted to move out of Johnson County for economic reasons. In November 1955, following passage of Johnson County Act No. 3, all communities within Johnson County were unincorporated except for Bishop Ranch (later named Park Hills). On July 1, 1957, all but Bishop Ranch became part of Park Hills; Buchanan remained an unincorporated community until 1965 when it joined Park Hills as part of the newly formed Johnson Counties project."

In 1872, Captains Coppell and John Waddell united with other pioneers to form the First Baptist Church in Coppell. This church remains one of today's most important institutions in the town. The Baptists helped to build many of the current buildings inCoppeltown including Main Street Methodist Church (1875), Covenant Baptist Church (1907), First Presbyterian Church (1969), and United Methodist Church (1996). Today, Coppeltown is home to a variety of businesses and residents who enjoy various activities such as fishing, hiking/backpacking, golfing, tennis/basketball/volleyball etc., all while having access to plenty of recreational opportunities available within walking or biking distance.

In 1890, Coppell became a city and continue to grow in size until it reached its current size of over 100,000 residents in 2000. Today, Coppell is home to several colleges and universities as well as several shopping malls and businesses.
