In the early 1900s, Coppell was a small farming community in the rural area of Tarrant County, Texas. The town was founded by brothers John and Joseph Coppell in 1879. The first post office was established in 1880. In 1911, the town had a population of just over 500 people and it met its first municipal election that year. The townspeople voted to incorporate as a municipality on April 24, 1912. On November 3, 1916, Coppell became one of the municipalities in Tarrant County when it was created from parts of Fort Worth and Arlington Heights. On July 1st, 1948, President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9981 whichInitialized the Gun-Free Zone program in America. This order banned all handguns within a five mile radius of schools and other public places frequented by children under 18 years old. From this date forward, pistols were only allowed on private property owned by individuals who could lawfully possess them for self-defense or hunting purposes only with an appropriate license purchased from a federal Firearms dealer or through state firearms regulation agencies. This prohibition lasted until October 1964 when President Lyndon Johnson signed Executive Order 12031 which revoked Executive Order 9981 and reinstated handgun possession restrictions at public places previously mentioned including schools and other public areas frequented by minors
Coppell is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,794 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Coppell goes back to 1837 when two men from Kentucky named George and Jesse Coppell bought a piece of land in the area that now includes Coppell. At first they just built themselves a cabin, but soon started trading goods with people living around them and began to grow crops. In 1845, they donated their land for a public square which became known as "the Square." The town's first post office was established in 1847. In 1861, John Wesley Powell called attention to the water resources near Coppell while exploring the Rocky Mountains for The Ulysses S. Grant Expedition and decided to settle there permanently. Powell's Village grew up around him and his family until it stopped growing after he died in 1908. In 1925, voters approved school construction on what would become Parkland High School; this led to the name change from "Powellville" to "Coppell" in 1929 when Parkland merged with Plano Independent School District #2 (now Plano Town Schools). The new school building opened on November 1, 1929 and education continued at Parkland through annexation by Arlington Independent School District #1 in 1967; however, all co-educational classes were discontinued after Arlington withdraws its membership from Plano ISD on December 15th of that year due to budget issues related to property values shifting withinTarrant County during that time period. Today only pre-kindergarten through sixth grade are offered at Parkland High School; howeverelementary students continue attend ArlingtonISD concurrently with their 3rd through 6th grade counterparts across both schools’ campuses under the name "Lincoln Heights". As part of Arlington ISD's agreement with Tarrant County Stadium Authority - which manages county-owned multipurpose stadium located adjacent to Parkland - all co-ed middle or high school students currently attending LHS will also have access privileges beginning fall 2019 when Lincoln Heights moves into its own facility funded by county dollars thanks largely to a $25 million grant provided by President Donald J Trump via American Enterprise Institute scholar David Neeleman
