Coppell is a town in Lackawanna County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,083 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to view what is now Coppell was a Spanish soldier named Hernando de Soto on May 25, 1536. He and his force explored the area and platted out a townsite called San Miguel de Allende on Aug. 18, 1692. A post office was established in Coppell on March 26, 1872, by J.M. Pollard with the name of "Allende". On December 2, 1907, an act of the legislature designated Coppell as a town under the jurisdiction of Wichita Falls. The original plat included land for waterworks which were built in 1915 and 1926; both are still in use today as municipal services are provided by Coppell Water District #1 (CWD #1). On November 20th 1920 vote by citizens of Wichita Falls to annex into Wichita Falls County there wasn't enough enthusiasm present to break away from existence as an independent town within their own county although annexation did take place without any formal ordinance being passed

It lies about 20 miles (32 km) northeast of Wichita Falls and 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Amarillo. The first post office in Coppell was established in 1887. In 1907, the phrase "Kansas City" replaced "Coppell" on the mailbox signs in the town. By 1920, Coppell had a school and two businesses. The first store opened in 1925 and became known as "The Grapes". In 1957, Coppell had its own water system and began to sell electricity to other towns in Johnson County. In 1978, it annexed part of Wichita Falls. In 2009-10 there were community meetings to discuss plans for development within the town limits which included residential housing developments; however some residents boycotted those meetings because they felt that their voice was not being heard
Coppell started as a small town in the early 1800s, but it rapidly grew during the turn of the century. By 1851, Coppell had become an important center for cattle and sheep trading, and became a major cotton-growing region. The town's growth continued through the mid-19th century, and by 1915 Coppell had reached its peak population of 508 residents. However, during World War I Coppell was destroyed by a fire that burned for days. In 1925, Coppell lost its status as a city when it merged with nearby Fort Worth.
