Coppell is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The first permanent European settlers in Coppell came from Scotland in 1821 as part of the Texas mission system. They were known as the "Cape Fear Rangers." In 1835, Coppell was chosen as the site for a new courthouse and jail, which were completed in 1836. The town was named for James Cupples, an early settler. In 1840, Coppell had a post office and two schools. In 1846, the US Postal Service established a branch office in Coppell to serve frontier settlers living outside of Houston and Dallas counties. The first store in Coppell reopened on October 2, 1865, after being closed by fire five days earlier. That same year saw the opening of Baylor University's first school campus west of Houston - now called Baylor University Tower - on what is now Eighth Street between Lamar Boulevard and I-45 near Loop 610 South. In 1870, Jesse Hogg founded Kenedy & Hogg merchant Tailor Shop on Fourth Street northeast of downtown Coppell. This business became one of the largest tailors shops in Texarkana until it closed its doors around 1980 due to competition from larger stores with better customer service skills. The building still stands today along with other buildings associated with that era including Hogg's Market Place restaurant which served up pioneer cuisine until it closed around 1990 also. In 1969–70 when Interstate 45 was built through Hudspeth County (the old section extending into present-day Austin), much less attention was given to rural areas east of I-45 because this area consisted mainly of agricultural land used for cattle farming or oil production.
