Coppell is a small town in Coryell County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2000 census. It lies on the west side of the Brazos River and is within the Williamson County Limits. The first Europeans to explore this area were traders traveling along the river in search of new land to sell to Americans. In 1824, Coppell was platted as a town by James Cook, a Scottish-born trader who had traveled through Texas before. At that time there was only one settlement in Coryell County - Fort Worth - and all other areas were still part of Mexico. As America grew wealthier during the 19th century, people from all over started moving into what would become Coppell. By 1890, when it became a city, Coppell had about 5200 residents. The city's growth continued until World War II when it decreased significantly due to wartime shortages of commodities such as oil and food that caused prices to increase dramatically throughout much of North America. Today, Coppell remains an important community with many businesses and residences located within its boundaries; however, its economy has changed little since its peak in the 1940s aside from some minor fluctuations related to commodity prices and local weather patterns

In 1902, when Williamson County became Tyler County, Coppell became part of Tyler Township which also included neighboring towns such as Magnolia and Pearland. It wasn’t until 1959 when Tyler Township split into two parts again-Tyler (north) and Archer (south).Coppell went through some major changes during World War II though not nearly as much as those experienced by other cities in Williamson County at that time due to its strategic location midway between Houston and Dallas on I-635 (then State Highway 118). In 1945 there were only 10 people living in Coppell but by 1951 it had grown to 30 with support from local business owners who wanted their town to remain strong even while other large metropolitan areas were shrinking around them. In 1836, the Republic of Texas was organized and named after the Mexican state of Coppell. The community's first post office was established in 1840. In 1851, a school was founded in the community. By 1865, a railroad had been built to connect Coppell with Dallas and other eastern cities. The town became an important agricultural center during the 19th century. However, by World War I, Coppell had lost its significance as a commercial center.
