Converse is a town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. The first settlement in Converse was made on January 6, 1851 by Fayetteville and Hubbard residents who had purchased land from the Texan government for $5 per acre. The name of the town was chosen by a vote of citizens in early 1852. The first post office was established in December 1852 and named after John Converse, an American lawyer and politician who served as U.S. Minister to Spain from 1850 to 1855. In 1861, Confederate soldiers burned down parts of Converse because it supported Union forces and refused to serve under Confederate General Robert E Lee. Although many people in Converse struggled during these years, they did manage to keep their community alive through various initiatives such as fundraising drives and support for local businesses. Today, much of downtown Converse remains unchanged from when it first started out; however, there are also several new businesses that have sprung up in recent years that continue to contribute to the town's growth.
