In 1951, after years of planning by local officials, Converse became home to the first high school vocational program in Texas when Lamar Technical High School opened its doors there. Other schools followed suit over the next few decades until all of Williamson County had high school vocational programs including Converse which remained as one of only a few community-based programs throughout most of this time period In 1970, Converse voters passed an ordinance allowing for cityhood which led to rapid growth within the limits of the then-townsquare as new businesses were added along with more housing developments that followed over time culminating in a population peak of 24,,242 in 2000 In 2013/14 this population declined slightly to 23,,868 with some recent growth coming from annexations within neighboring unincorporated areas . In 2017/18 converse voted to become a full city
The first people to settle in Converse were the Henningsons. They arrived in 1851 and built a cabin on the east side of town. In 1854, they started a grocery store and began to sell goods from their carpenter shop. The store was successful and allowed them to buy land on the west side of town. In 1857, they started a school and in 1860, they built a church. The church was destroyed by an accident in 1865, but the school continued to function until it burned down in 1955.
