Gun targets have been a part of Converse, Texas for over 100 years. The first target was placed in the town in 1876 by a group of men from Converse. From that time until 1978, the town's only public shooting range was located on 3 acres at the Western Schoolhouse. The current location for the range is on 2 acres at the Tower Park Recreation Area. There are three lanes, five feet wide and 25 feet long, with 12-inch Columbian green circles painted on both sides of each lane. A 20-foot elevated platform allows shooters to hit their targets from a distance of up to 30 yards. From 1876 to 1978, there were also private gun ranges located in Converse. Today, there are only two public gun ranges left in Converse: one located at Tower Park Recreation Area and the other located at Western Schoolhouse. BothAlthough private gun ranges continue to be used in Converse today, they are not open to the general public; they must be rented or leased through individual firearm dealerships called “gun clubs” which have memberships that allow them access to special privileges such as unlimited Range Time and discounts on ammo and firearms sales.

On November 22, 1881, the first ever public shooting in Converse took place. A group of men from the local Masonic Lodge convened to shoot a duck on the Common. The event was so successful that they decided to hold another event two days later. The next year, on December 3rd, 1882, there were twelve men present for a target shoot at the old Mechanics store. In 1885, a rifle range and pistol range were built on North Main Street by A.G. Kinnaird and Wm Hayshaw. In 1907 it was purchased by John Tisdale who put in an eight-gun rapid fire training range with sixty feet of barrel length and four three-hole targets at twenty yards which he used as a game field for his farm animals. In 1916 JB Healy bought out Tisdale’s share and continued using the range until 1978 when it closed down because of budget cuts. In 1925 Milt Larkin opened up his own gun shop on South Main Street which became known as Larkin & Sons Gun Shop after him and Edward Larkin merged their businesses in 1961 (Larkin & Sons Guns). In 1977 Egon Schieffer opened Upjohn Firearms out of his home onto Westheimer Road near IH 35 just west of town limits; this business is still open today with about seventy guns stored inside along with ammunition and accessories
Converse is a small town in West Texas, located on the banks of the Brazos River. The population was 6,123 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1857 by brothers John and James Converse as a sawmill and grist mill on the south bank of the river. The mill was destroyed by a flood in 1865, but it reopened two years later. By 1870, Converse had developed into an agricultural center with 3 cotton plantations and over 100 head of cattle. In 1898, Converse became an independent municipality when it merged with nearby trading post Junction City. In 1909, it incorporated as a city under the name of "Converse". In 1960, it changed its name to "Dallas-Fort Worth" after annexation by Dallas. Today, Converse is known for its large population of Cowboy hatters who make their own hats from cowhide leather products. The town also has several restaurants and bars popular with locals and tourists alike as well as a shopping mall which includes several high-end stores including Macy's Department Store and Sears Roebuck & Co..

Over time Targets became more enclosed within Shooter's hides which protected them from danger while still allowing them to be shot at easily from a distance. Today Target Shooting is enjoyed by everyone who participates both recreationally and professionally.
