In 1847, a man by the name of George Stephenson donated land to the town of Converse. The town was founded on July 4th, 1847 by James W. Gregg and others. In 1951, a bill was passed that made it illegal for anyone under 21 years old to purchase or possess any firearms without a license from the county sheriff. This law still applies today. In 1967, another bill was passed that prohibited citizens from carrying handguns in public areas without special permits from police officers. Converse is a small town located in Cameron County, Texas. The population was 1,451 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The Converse Volunteer Fire Department provides fire protection for the community. The first residents of Converse were English colonists who arrived in 1769. They named their settlement after John Converse, a British officer who had helped capture Mexico City from French forces during the Mexican War of Independence. The United States purchased land around Converse in 1839 and established it as Fort Bend County seat. In 1845, the name was changed to Cameron County when Texas became a state. Today, Converse remains an agricultural community with a focus on corn and cotton production. In 1914, General Ulysses S Grant visited Cameron County and inspected military installations there before his stay in nearby Austin on his way to visit San Antonio de Bexar as commander of all American troops in Southwest Texas Area A (October 14-18). Grant called this area "the most important section of our country." After his visit, many farmers began planting cotton near Fort Bend Dam between Harrisonburg and Clear Creek because they could irrigate their crops using water diverted from the Rio Grande River within 10 miles of Fort Bend by means of canals and pipelines built by the Army Corps of Engineers under Project El Dorado (). The discovery of oil fields along US Highway 183 east of here led to increased production throughout much of Texas beginning in 1949; however, oil production ceased completely in 1978 due to environmental concerns about hydraulic fracturing (fracking) activities associated with that period's development across many states including Cameron County As early as 1903 residents knew about natural gas reserves rich enough to bring long-distance service but not developed until 1923 when Halliburton Pipe Line drilled into what would become known as Hill Country Gas Field White Sulphur Springs opened its gates on October 3rd 1912 providing below ground storage for Tilghman LNG which should have been exported but never did . Converse was founded in 1872 by John Converse and his wife, Rebecca. The town was named for John's father, who had died in 1851. The couple started a clothier and mill in the town and began exporting raw cotton to fertilizer plants. In 1876, they moved their business to Fort Worth and opened a second store there. In 1886, they built a house on what is now First Street in Converse. In 1908, they sold their store and all their assets to the Humble Oil Company for $1 million. From then until 1960, the Converse family operated their stores under the name of Humble Oil Company Store Co., Inc.. In 1950, an oil well was drilled near Converse and production began that year; this led to increased economic development around the town. factories were built at nearby Midland and Beaumont as demand for oil grew; during this time also, more people began moving into Converse from surrounding towns. The population of Converse peaked at over 100 residents in 1960 but has declined since then due to various factors such as suburbanization and loss of jobs in related industries. Since 1990, when deregulation of oil prices caused numerous job losses throughout the U.S., many businesses have closed within the town including those belonging to the original Humble Oil Company Store Co., Inc.. However, some businesses have been reborn with new owners or begun anew as local entrepreneurs have tried to revive old-fashioned small-town America hereabouts (euphemistically called "The Rust Belt"). Today much of what once made up Converse - its friendly atmosphere (due largely to its tight-knit community), its close proximity to Fort Worth downtown area where many businesses still operateinderspite significant neglect by city planners - has long since vanished save for a few remaining buildings which together form an overall somber reminder of one era while another rapidly approaches sv Salvation Army Supply Depot #2 across First Avenue from where I stand today
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded. The Lone Star state became a U.S. territory in February 1846 when President James K. Polk ceded it to the United States. In March 1850, Texas annexation by Mexico led to the Mexican–American War and the effective founding of the Republic of Texas as an all-American government with Texan independence as its goal. In November 1861, Confederate forces invaded Texas and eventually captured Austin while losing much of EastTexas before withdrawing completely in 1865. On November 2, 1871, the last day of Reconstruction following our Civil War, General Sam Houston was ratified as president of the new republic by a vote of all 25 states in what is now Oklahoma Territory (New Mexico had already seceded).
