One of the first things that the white settlers did when they arrived in this land was to name it after General James Bowie – an American hero who had fought against Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War. After Bowie’s death in 1872, his widow decided to change the name to Bowie County in honor of her late husband. There have been many changes to Converse over time – from being an agricultural center known for its cotton fields until it became a bustling city with heavy industry during World War II. Today, Converse remains one of my favorite small towns because it still retains all of its traditional values while having access to everything that larger cities have become known for.

In 1834, Converse became an independent township under the jurisdiction of Williamson County. The first post office was established in 1835 and by 1840, there were nine dwellings and two stores in town. Businesses included a millinery, a wagon wheel factory, and a leather tanner. In 1847, John Fetterman donated land to form what is now Oklahoma State Universitycampus. As enrollment increased at OSU, several buildings were constructed including the Old Main building which currently houses the university's dining hall and student union. After World War II, many businesses closed due to changes in industry or location; however, one business that survived was Lumberjacks Loans & Trust which has since been acquired by Wells Fargo Banknorthwest division.
