Converse is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,890 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the Converse River. It is part of the Amarillo metropolitan area. The first people to live here were the Comanche and Kiowa Apaches who brought firearms over from Mexico in 1836. In 1839, John Marshall Converse married Jane Goodloe (born 1799) and they set up a trading post near what is now downtownConverse. They started out farming but soon realized that it was not possible to sustain a community of this size without some kind of water supply and so began construction on what would become the present-day City Hall building which opened in 1845. In 1870, James Witherspoon built a cotton gin in what is now known as Old Town Converse which led to its current name of "the Cotton District". There are several theories about why this particular name came about; one suggests that because so much cotton was grown here during those years, there was an overwhelming demand for cotton thread and fabric all around Converse locality. Another theory suggests that because early mill owners such as James Witherspoon had ties with many key components of local political life – including Congressman Don McCulloch – when their mills closed down or went out of business, people began calling them "Witherspoon's Mill" or " McCulloch's Mills." Whatever the reason for it being called "the Cotton District," it stuck and today remains an important part of town history. In 1927, Floyd Jernigan developed land east of Main Street between Third Street South and Interstate 35E into what became known as Little Elm Park after his daughter Lilith Fairbanks (1902-1990), then CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation (now Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co.,L). She donated $3 million towards park construction which included eventual addition of tennis courts, a children’s play area and other features today known as Ballpark Village™. In 1948 the Texas Rangers moved into Little Elm Park after relocating from Fort Worth; it served as their headquarters until 1959 when they relocated to Arlington Heights south of Houston due to budget limitations within Ranger Command Headquarters at George Bush Intercontinental Airport north side Austin TX). In 1951 Municipal Judge Clyde Pogue became involved with development here when he purchased 50 acres west off IH35 just southof Main Street from rancher Harry Whitehead; Pogue used his land to build Heritage Plaza which includes Music Hall®, Art Gallery®, movie theater®, restaurant*, convention center*& more.. This unique plaza has been home to various events throughout its history including state government meetings*, county government meetings*, annual 4th OF JULY parade*& more.* For over 60 years Heritage Plaza has been a major tourist attraction for locals & visitors alike!

Converse is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,646 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Converse was John A. Hardesty in 1872. In 1875, J.D. Hill purchased land east of present day Converse and built a cabin which he named Hindsville after his father-in-law, General James H. Hinds (1803-1876). In 1893, when Pecos County was created from parts of Midland and Travis counties, Hardesty donated to Pecos County $2,500 for development of a courthouse site and post office on the west side of town square; this became the first courthouse in Pecos County. On July 10, 1907 an act by the Texas Legislature provided for the merger of districts within Midland County into one new county with its seat at Dallas; accordingly, on December 15 of that year residents of towns in Travis and Midland Counties voted to secede from Travis County and form their own new county called Pecos County under the leadership of Governor George Wickersham (1851-1924). The official incorporation date for Converse as a municipality was October 17th OF 1909
Converse, Texas was founded in 1836 by cattle ranchers and settlers. The town rapidly grew and became a leading center for cattle ranching and farming in the region. In the early 1800s, Converse was home to several cotton plantations that produced cottonseed oil. The industry declined during the Civil War, but resumed after Reconstruction. Afterward, Converse growth slowed and there were few new erections until the late 1900s when it experienced a large population boom due to its location as a key shipping point for Middle Eastern oil exports.
