In 1990, Converse had a population of just under 6,000 people; by 2004 it had reached 11,000 people. In 2007-2008 there was an increase in crime in the city; this has led to a decline in business activity since then. However, new development is planned for downtown Converse and other areas surrounding it which should help to revive its economy.
The town of Converse, Texas was founded in 1859 by George Washington Converse. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Butterfield Overland Route and its accessibility to the Mexican market. In 1861, the Union army burned down the courthouse and much of the town when they fought for control of Mexico. The few buildings that survived were gradually rebuilt and renamed after their original owners. In 1936, Converse was merged with neighboring towns of Lubbock and Odessa to form a new city named Midway.
