Converse is a town in Stephens County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,598 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls–Hutchinson Micropolitan Statistical Area. The original post office for Converse was established on October 12, 1892. The first firearms were brought over by two prospectors from Wyoming in 1892. They named their new settlement "Converse" after their old homestead in that state. The town's first store opened in 1895 and functioned as a mercantile until 1913 when the town incorporated and started to sell municipal services such as streetlights and water meters. In 1916, Converse became one of the towns located within the Wichita Falls Municipal Airport Authority which served Irvin Air Force Base until it closed in 1984. In 1935, Converse voted to ban handguns but this decision was overturned by a referendum vote due to lack of turnout; however, this law still stands today as Converse is one of only three towns in Texas that have not repealed it since then (the other two being Odessa andMission). On July 1st, 1955, Converse voted to become an open-carry community with handguns becoming legal for all citizens regardless of citizenship or gun permit status. This marked the beginning of statewide open carry laws where handgun possession became legal without any permits or registration required throughout most of Texas except Amarillo which still requires both these items although handgun possession has now become pervasive there too despite having no known ordinancecriminalizing open carry
