Converse is a town in Bowie County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,703 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Converse was established on October 15, 1865. The name of the town changed from Greenville to Converse due to confusion with Greenville, South Carolina. The first store in Converse opened on December 5, 1865 by Wm Hockaday and his son-in-law Jno Pritchett. Mrs. Lizzie Beattie operated a grocery store until 1887 when her daughter married John Gentry and ran the business together for several years until Mrs. Gentry's death in 1912; she bequeathed it to her daughter who continued it as a family business known as Gentry's Store until 1978 when it closed its doors for good. In 1907 Elmer Aiken platted land around what is now downtown Converse and began building homes there which he named "The Acres". At that time all of Bowie County was unincorporated so development within the town Limits were unregulated and without any government control or regulation one could build anything they pleased just as long as it did not encroach upon other people's property rights or disrupt their lives either commercially or politically; businesses located east of Main Street (now 4th Street) were subject to special zoning laws providing them with exclusive use of certain streets while those located west had access to all local commercial thoroughfares making them very important economic engines drivingpopulation growth over time Aiken became proprietor of the acrescent complex which included some 12 houses and 3 barns before selling it in 1916 to Jno Hocking who renamed it "Hocking Manor" after himself In 1922 Hocker sold his holdings including Manor back to Aiken who again developed it into an 8-house complex named "The Acres II" with additional garage space added In 1936 Lamar Hunt bought "The Acres II", renovated and enlarged it into what is now called Hunt House Place following his purchase of Kirtland Oil Company from Ewing Hockey Incorporated which owned most of Wichita Falls then leased out portions thereof to various businesses during that period An adjacent house became known as Hunt School House but programmatically remains unnamed today serving only as a museum . In 1946 Hunt House Place was added by deed from him jointly with wife Winifred (Boyle) Hunt along with another house on Main Street between 4th and 5th Streets also calledHunt School House becoming home primarily for their children during these times although occasionally guests are entertained there such as Presidents Harry Truman and Franklin D Roosevelt . After Winifred's death in 1984 both properties reverted back under Mr. Hunt's management beginning in earnest on January 1st 1985 when new deeds were filed giving rise thereto title deeds held by him alone including 2 adjoining lots totaling 63 acres surroundingHunt House Place forming today’s City limits thereby conferring city status uponConverse/Wichita Falls area

Converse was founded in 1881 by Levi Converse and his wife, Anna. The town became a thriving center for cotton farming and manufacturing, with Converse becoming one of the leading textile towns in Texas. In 1915, Converse was renamed “Thornapple” in honor of Thornapple Farms, the town’s largest employer. The farm continued to be an important part of the community until it closed in 1996. Today, Thornapple is a popular tourist spot perfect for exploring the local history and culture. In 1881, Levi Converse and Anna set out from their home in Beaumont to start a new life in what would become Thornapple County. The couple had married shortly before they arrived in Texas, so they had no idea how much work they would have to put into their new home. They quickly found that cotton farming was an extremely difficult and time-consuming business; however, they were determined to make their mark on this new land. The early years of Thornapple were filled with hard work and stress – but also with some great moments. For example, when Levi met Anna she was just a young woman working as a domestic help at her family’s farm; within months he had proposed marriage and she accepted! They set out on what would be a long journey together - traveling overland through tough conditions every day during those early days. And despite all the challenges, Levi always managed to keep his head down and look forward to future opportunities. By 1895 Thornapple had developed into one of the most prosperous communities in Texas thanks largely to its large employers: Thornapple Farms (later known as Monsanto). With such big names associated with itvikt Valley – like Eli Lilly & Co., Armourhoughton Dow Corning Company, Pabst Brewing Company – Thornapples residents could finally enjoy good times without having to worry about basic needs such as food or water available 24/7/365 (although there were occasional shortages). This prosperity led to increased civic engagement among locals – who started committees responsible for everything from building roadsides parks to dusting government buildings! Folkloric tales about "the little old lady" who raised crops while dodging bullets abound today…but back then everyone knew her name: Mrs Jabez! In 1916 Thort apple got another big boost when Governor John Connally appointed Mr Charles Neely as its first Mayor (a role which he held until his retirement two years later). Under Neely's leadership growth began again at Thort apple; by 1922 construction of what is now Main Street had begun on what is todayconverses main square - making it one of the earliest commercial streets in town! A few years later Joe McNary opened up his own grocery store on Main Street – giving converse its first major supermarket!!! Overall Mr Neely's administration saw tremendous progress both economically and politically throughout TX; many credit him with helping turn around Thort apple during this time period!"
In 1839, Converse was founded by John A. Converse and his brother-in-law, David W. Hogg. The town was named in honor of General Andrew Jackson, who had recently been elected President. The first store in the town opened its doors on November 1, 1839. By 1850, there were six stores in Converse and the population had increased to about 500 residents. On December 14, 1858, a tornado touched down near Converse and destroyed much of the town center and some homes. It is estimated that up to $30,000 worth of property was damaged or lost in the storm. The town experienced another tornado outbreak on February 3rd & 4th of 1861 which cause damage to several homes and businesses within the town limits.
