In 1868, Scotsman John Converse founded a trading post called Fort Converse on what is now Elm Street in Converse. The post served as an important haven for traders and travelers during the early days of Texas transportation and trade. In 1872, John Converse married Sarah Jane Smith and moved to Converse to live with her. The couple had five children: James Fenton Converse (1873-1951), Charles Witherspoon Ransom (1875-1948), Martha Louise (1877-1971), Johnnie Raymond Cook (1879-1963) and Sarah Jane Cook (born c. 1880). After years of farming operations, John &Sarah's final years were spent living in their home on Elm Street until they passed away there on October 6th, 1958 after long illness. The first store opened in 1907 by Mrsn Ethel Crouch who was also one of the founders of Amarillo Community Schools which still operates today as a public school district. This store was moved to its present location in 1951 when it amalgamated with three other stores into one smaller plaza location known then as "The Plaza". One hundred fifty nine years later, March 16th 2017 marks that milestone when The Plaza reopened as "The Concourse" after much renovation and improvement - marking yet another milestone for this landmark shopping center!

The community was founded by European settlers in 1872 and named for two distinguished Converse citizens- J.C. Converse and Drury Converse. The town's first store was established on the corner of Sixth Street and Main Avenue in 1872. By 1880, there were five stores in the town and three hotels. In 1907, the first post office opened in Converse with a population of just 12 people. By 1970, there were only twelve residents living within the limits of the community; however, it continued to grow rapidly due to its location close to major highways and other businesses statewide which aided its growth. In 1990, construction began on Interstate 35W which would connect Williamson County with Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area; this caused increased development within Converse as businesses relocated closer to interstate highway 565 - increasing business opportunities for both menial labor as well as high-tech companies that took advantage of new transportation corridors like I-35W Furthermore, multiple restaurants/bars became popular tourist destinations during this time period due to their proximity to I-35W and nearby shopping malls such as Grapevine Mills Mall or stadium complex known as NorthPark Center - making it easy for visitors to find food options while also providing entertainment options such as live music concerts or family fun events throughout summer months

In 1849, the town became an incorporated community under the name of Houston. The population of Houston grew rapidly during this time and by 1860, Converse had slipped into obscurity. However, in 1871, Houston annexed Converse as part of its city limits. From then on, Converse slowly regained its former importance as a commercial and cultural center. In recent years, however, it has experienced several setbacks including declining population and economic activity; however, it remains an important historical site today.
