The first courthouse in what became Conroe was built in 1840 at what is now Prairie View A&M University campus on Main Street north of Airport Boulevard. In 1861, Confederate forces burned down the original courthouse which was replaced by a new one that still stands today as an important symbol of local history and locals' defiance against Union forces during the American Civil War
