Conroe is a small town in central Texas, located on the banks of the Conroe River. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The first permanent European settler in what is now Conroe was James Robertson in 1836. He and his family built a cabin on the bank of the river, which they named "New France." In 1840, Alexander Campbell founded a trading post and brick works here which became one of the largest brickyards in Texas. In 1846, John Crain organized what would become The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) in Conroe. The IOOF was key to establishing social and political stability during Reconstruction in Texas after statehood. A cotton gin was erected here by Jeptha Scott near present day Houston in 1851; this helped spur economic development around Conroe and within miles of it. In 1861, Confederate Major General Robert Ewell camped near Conroe for several days while he awaited orders to retreat from Fort Sumter. On July 6th & 7th 1863, Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant attacked Confederate positions at Red Oak Creek Bridge just east of town while Confederates were attempting to cross over into neighboring Montgomery County via that bridge; both events led to heavy casualties among both sides with many men killed or wounded including Jubal Early and Pemberton Hillyer. Aftermath included more than 1,500 Confederate dead as well as 4 cannons captured by Union forces before being returned to Confederate hands two months later following an amphibious assault by Union troops landing at Galveston Bayou opposite Beaumont Point on July 30th 1865; Union forces were able to capture most if not all trophies including 3 cannonicks along with 350 prisoners total becoming an important victory for Grant against Richmond’s last major effort before defeat at Appomattox Court House three weeks later that ended hostilities that November 26th 1865. It wasn't until 1896 when rancher Johnnie Ladd opened up country west of town off FM 1960 about 12 miles long known today as Addicks Reservoir Nature Preserve due largely to efforts made by Congressman Lloyd Doggett who represented districts neighbouring towns such as Conroe throughout much of ranching history - beginning with its establishment when Giddings County gained county status following Statehood in 1901 - that ranching really took off hereabouts leading eventually to today's sprawling agricultural community characterizing much rural Texan life since then primarily through its commercial enterprises: cattle drives (still important), oil production (with some gas drilling going on currently), farming/livestock raising (some very large operations still going strong), health services (includingendarmeria now providing EMS coverage for larger communities across central TX), trade shows etc., making this an attractive place for Visitations regardless: A quite interesting read whether you are interested mainly historically or simply enjoy good ol' fashioned cowboys 'n'Indians typeTexans!
