Conroe, Texas is a city in Brazoria County, Texas, United States. The population was 143 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Conroe were members of the Caddo and Wichita Sioux Nation. In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded and by 1840 there were only six families living in Conroe. However, by 1850 there were 300 residents living in Conroe with a school and post office. By 1860 there were 1,500 residents living in Conroe with a courthouse and jail. On September 2nd 1861, during the American Civil War (the Battle of San Jacinto), Confederate General Robert Ewell's artillery shell hit an ammunition depot across from Piney Creek School killing twelve people and wounding thirty-six others that same day including one Congressman John Hogg (R-18) who later became Governor of Texas.). In 1865 when Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived to take over command of the Confederacy after defeating General Lee at Gettysburg he ordered his army into disarray just outside of town near Reliant Park. As Union forces advanced they encountered Confederate troops encamped on Prospect Hillock leading up to town limits whereupon General Grant ordered them to turn around and march back home while he went into town to confer with President Abraham Lincoln on what should be done next about the war. Just before midnight on November 5th 1865 Union soldiers discovered three hundred Confederates hiding inside houses along Prospect Hillock Road as they retreated back towards downtown Conroe under cover of darkness having failed to find their general which only added fuel to the fire for all those involved including Generals Grant and Sherman who had both fought against each other earlier that year during the Civil War.) On December 15th 1865 Union General James Longstreet arrived at Greenwood Cemetery located two miles northeast of downtown Conroe with 3rd Brigade cavalry led by Major Wade Hampton burning alive anyone found within earshot or sight of him as part of his scorched earth policy following his victory at Appomattox Court House five days earlier). Aftermath: Over 100 bodies burned beyond recognition still lying today amongst blackened earth atop Greenwood Cemetery where men women & children died trying to escape..
