Conroe is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands metropolitan area. The first settlers in Conroe were prospectors from Missouri who named their new settlement after Mount Rucker (later known as Rice Hill), about 35 miles east of Houston. By 1845, the community had a population of about 50 residents and was located on the banks of Spring Branch Creek. A sawmill and gristmill were built in 1850 and 1861 respectively, providing essential economic support for the community until the early 20th century when oil production began to take off in Texas. In 1907, Conroe became an incorporated town with a population of 2,500 people. The original downtown core was destroyed by fire in 1928 but was rebuilt using materials from nearby homes and businesses including an old cotton gin that still stands today on Main Street near Spring Branch Creek. This unique building served as both a courthouse and post office until it burned down again in 1957. In 1953, Conroe voters adopted a master plan for development that included Anadarko Petroleum Corporation's Oil Refinery No. 4 which would become one ofHouston's most famous landmarks during its heyday as one of America's leading petroleum companies during World War II and later into the 21st century. The refinery produced up to 360 million barrels per day (mbd) from 1951 until 1991 when it closed due to pollution concerns.
