Conroe was founded in 1871 and incorporated as a town on November 1, 1881. The name "Conroe" derives from the Choctaw word ảnárkáw meaning 'big cottonwood tree'. The first settler in what is now Conroe was A.W. Goodwin and his family who arrived from Arkansas on March 20, 1871 during the era of Indian Removal. Goodwin's parents were James and Sarah Goodnow and he had two siblings: Johnathan and Alonzo Collins Goodwin Jr. On October 15, 1872, three days after President Ulysses S. Grant signed Executive Order 9066 making all Americans citizens regardless of race or color whether they lived within their own state or not, Goodwin's father died at Fort Gibson while garrisoning there with Company K of the 5th Cavalry Regiment under Colonel Samuel J Moorehead - one of many such fatalities during Indian Wars fought by American troops across Mexico that year In 1901 when Conroe incorporated as a town it had a population of 2200 people; by 1910 its population had increased to 27,827 thanks to waves of immigrants coming through Conroe looking for work opportunities in what was then an agricultural backwater known for its natural gas reserves which were being vigorously developed by Texaco (the company later merged with ExxonMobil). One reason why so much development occurred in this small town during this time period was because there were no other towns close by with anything like the same level of development available to them – until oil production began to increase significantly in North Texas starting around 1970 these days things rapidly grew up hereabouts due to hydraulic fracturing (fracking), an unconventional process used to extract shale gas and other oil formations deep underground
The town of Conroe was founded in 1836 by John A. Robertson and his family. The first store in the town was opened by John Robertson on December 12, 1836. In 1840, the town had a population of fourteen people. In 1847, the Texas Legislature created the city of Conroe and offered it to Robertson for purchase. He refused and moved his family to Houston. The city of Conroe was incorporated on November 15, 1848. In 1870, a post office was established at Conroe and remained in operation until 1959. In 1951, a new dam was constructed upstream from the original Conroe Dam and provided electricity for the town until 1969 when it went out due to budget cuts. In 1990, an I-35 interchange was built near the original Conroe Dam which caused traffic congestion around the area for years as buses would pull into service on ramps located at FM 19609 (now US 290). The interchange has been closed since 2001 when FM 19609 became part of I-10 with access from both directions available through local roads
