Conroe is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas, about 30 miles southeast of Dallas and 30 miles north of Houston. As of 2010, the population was estimated to be over 100,000 residents. The city is part of the Houston–The Woodlands metropolitan area. It was founded by Major General James Ketchum on November 3, 1836 as Fort Conroe, named for his father-in-law Colonel John Fenton Conroe, a Confederate general during the American Civil War. The first post office in town was established on December 17, 1836,[1] and the first street was laid out on May 10, 1837.[2] On January 1st, 1840[3], Fort Conroe became an official military installation within Mexican territory under US occupation following Texan independence from Mexico. In 1861 Houston gained jurisdiction over both Mexican territories and Fort Conroe reverted back to US control; however it continued as an garrison until 1865 when it became an independent command under Majors G E Moore and J H Boggs with headquarters at Galveston Bayou near present day Montrose Drive (later renamed Jones Branch Boulevard). In 1930[4],Fort Conroe served as Headquarters for all Texas Air National Guard Districts; this assignment ended when Headquarters moved to Austin in 1935[5]. A new Command Center Building was completed in 1984 adjacent to current day Memorial Park which served as Headquarters for all USAF District commands from 1961 through 1984 before that district merged into AFHQ Austin. Finally on October 15th 2005[6], Headquarters relocated again from Austin to Joint Base Lewis-McChord outside Tacoma Washington where they serve currently as Combined Forces Command Southwest Region Commander with primary duty being air defense for forces operating in Southwest Washington including Multnomah County.[7] The Joint Base Lewis-McChord Wing also houses two Boeing 727 squadrons providing global airlift support with particular emphasis on operations flown over Japan during Operation Tomodachi since 2007 through OPERATION JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD WING - JAPAN AIR FORCE STRATEGIC INTERCEPTION CENTER (OJIBE). Today's economy largely depends upon energy production associated with oil shale mining and refining which is done primarily by Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation who operates three plants: one manufactures turboprop jets used by Gulfstream Airlines; one produces Hector GC-130 Hercules transport helicopters used by Department of Public Safety Agencies such as Harris County Constable's Office; and one manufactures KC–130 Stratotanker Aircraft used by State Police agencies such as DPS trooper detachments across Texas

The first settlers in what is now Conroe were French Canadian Canadiens who came toTexas from Louisiana in 1836 as part of a larger group known as the rough Riders. In 1839, General Sam Houston granted them land along Clear Lake and also foundedHouston Mills, one of Texas' early textile mills. The cotton industry soon replaced agriculture as Conroe's primary economic focus, and by 1865 its population had reached 10,000 people. In 1881, oil was discovered at Menard Field in present-day Montgomery County; this led to rapid growth for Conroe and its neighbor Baytown during the late 19th century due to oil production and related infrastructure development. By 1920s, Baytown had surpassed Conroe as Houston's principal suburban center while Conroe continued to experience strong economic growth until it reached its peak around 1990s when health concerns began to impact its economy significantly
