From this location, General Houston developed a cattle drive which ran through Colleyville providing milk for local farmers and supplying beef to soldiers stationed at Fort Hood in Texas. In 1872, Colonel W M Hamer established a dry goods store atColleyville Creek which served as a key base for trading with settlers throughout Kerr County. By 1880, Hamer's store had grown into one of the largest mercantile enterprises in Texas due to its wide variety of products available from overseas mail order catalogues such as Sears & Roebuck and J&R Clark

The Colleyville area was once a ranching and farming community. The ranchers in the area were known for their dry climate and high quality cattle. The community was founded in 1881 by James Fenton, who named it after his birthplace, Colney Fitz Hugh from County Clare, Ireland. Fenton's family had operated a stock farm in the Colleyville area since the 1840s. In 1902, the Fenton brothers built the first school in Colleyville. In 1915, an irrigation system was installed to improve cotton production in the area. In 1948, Senator Harris Wofford of Texas introduced a bill to create Texas State University in Colleyville. The university would be based in Colleyville and offer undergraduate and graduate programs as well as evening courses. The bill was passed by the state senate but not signed by Governor Connally until 1951. In 1957, Texas A&M University opened its doors inColleyville with a program that offered undergraduate degrees through academic buildings on campus without having to leave town. In 1967, Baylor University opened its doors inColleyville with a program that offered undergraduate degrees through academic buildings on campus without having to leave town. In 1975, Texas Tech Universityopened its doorsinColleyville with a program that offered undergraduate degrees through academic buildings on campus without having to leave town.
