He built a cabin on the site of present-day San Antonio and named it Colleyville after his wife's father, Colonel Richard Colley (1785-1851). The town of Colleyville began to grow rapidly around Cavanaugh's cabin. By 1830, it had a population of about 20 people. In 1832, John Fenton established a cotton gin here and named it Fenton Cotton Plantation after himself and his brother-in-law David Fenton (1800-1872). This plantation was one of the most important cotton plantations in Texas during the antebellum period. In 1841, James Polk became president of the United States and announced his intention to take control of Mexico. As a result, Mexican forces invaded Texas and invaded Fenton Cotton Plantation. The Union army drove them out and burned down the plantation buildingsiphonizing all evidence from within as they did so. Consequently, few people know about this event in Colleyville history since no contemporaneous records survive from that time period. Fenton Cotton Plantation continued to be run by family members until 1865 when it passed into public ownership under General Billy Graham’s supervision. From then until its sale to an interested party in 1888, it reverted back to private hands again with occasional visits by officials from various government agencies over time as part of ongoing efforts to manage thisimportant property more effectively for its stakeholders including farmers, visitors, developers and entrepreneurs who have continually restored portions or completely rebuilt portions of this once major cotton plantation complex since then - often using local resources whenever possible while still honoring these historic values & traditions which made these properties unique & special among other large cotton plantations located throughout much rural Southwestern US regions during much earlier American History periods
