When Texas was admitted to the Union in 1846, it consisted of only a land area of around 640,000 acres. The rest of what is now Texas was Mexico’s colony. The western half of Texas became part of the United States after the Mexican-American War and was organized as the Republic of Texas in 1848. On January 6, 1901, the Republic was replaced by Oklahoma when that state seceded from the United States. The towns that would form Colleyville were founded during this time period. It started out as a small community on a ranch near what is now Interstate 10. early settlers were farmers and ranchers who used their property for grazing animals and grew crops for local consumption or export to neighboring states. As Colleyville grew, its residents began to settle into businesses and professions such as attorneys, teachers, doctors, dentists and other workers in nearby cities like Houston and Dallas. From its beginnings as an agricultural town with few people living outside the immediate area until it became one of America’s largest bedroom communities due to its location on I-10, Colleyville achieved stability within itself through its tightknit community spirit which persists to this day
The first white settlers in Colleyville arrived in the late 18th century. In 1821, General Sam Houston and his force laid claim to what is now central Texas and named the area for John S. Colley, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The town grew quickly after this initial discovery, thanks to its location on one of the best routes between San Antonio and Austin. By 1838, Colleyville had a population of about 200 residents. During the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Colleyville sided with Mexico and fought against United States forces under President James K. Polk. After Mexican independence was recognized by both countries, many Texans abandoned their support for Mexico and decided to stay with Britain instead. This lack of international recognition led to increasing violence in southern Texas during the 1850s as various groups struggled for control over what was then an American landmass. In 1861, when Confederate troops invadedTexas via Arkansas, they passed through Central Texas en route to join Confederate forces in South Carolina; most people living along the route were unable or unwilling to fight against their own countrymen. However, some young men did enlist in Confederate units (eFigures show that about 1 out of every 10 male children born in Texas between 1840 and 1860 served as soldiers). When hostilities ended two years later, fewColleyvillians returned home; most likely due to fears that Reconstruction policies would not be fair nor kind to them since they had supported slavery while it continued actively being practiced across state lines – a practice which still continues today (See: Jim Crow Laws). A large number of these refugees settled into Colleyville’s rapidly growing black community which began developing around 1870 from scratch after African Americans were granted access to education and housing opportunities denied them hitherto (See: Black Migration). As Reconstruction progressed throughout America – especially following Brown v Board - various African American families moved back into Central Texas settlement seeking stability and opportunity amid difficult economic conditions caused by federal policies targeting black farmers specifically.(See: Black Southern Migration) However progress was slow due largely due to factors such as racism within local government institutions who refused or could not provide services necessary for integrating all races into society without consequence(see: Integration). Since World War II there has been significant growth taking place including new subdivisions/housing developments as well as increased trafficarceration making nearby Slaughtertown an increasingly undesirable place due primarily to crime rates although it remains one of the fastest growing areas northcentral TX
