As soon as they heard about the planned demonstration, the soldiers began moving towards the square but were met with gunfire from the civilian crowd. Fifteen people were killed outright before being able to flee or hide inside buildings; most of these victims were shot by members of Company D3 stationed at nearby Fort Worth Union Station. A total of 106 people were arrested after the massacre; twenty-one remain dead today as a result of their injuries or deaths during or after the event. The majority (79%)of those arrested are still serving prison terms today pursuant to sentences handed down following trial proceedings that have lasted over eighty years now.
