In 1836, College Station was the site of the first Texas college, Lamar University. In 1892, a new university, The University of Texas at Austin (UTA), was founded there. In 1923, UTA became part of the University of Texas System and in 1949 it became UTSA. Today, UTSA is one of the largest universities in Texas with over 100 undergraduate and graduate programs. The history of College Station goes back to 1836 when two students from neighboring counties met to discuss a form of educational organization for Texans. They decided that a school should be established where both students and graduates could come to learn about each other and improve their skills. Thus, on July 3rd1836, voters in Brazoria County approved the founding of Lamar Institute by Judge John Kirby and James Buchanan Houston as a way for men AND women to receive an education without leaving their homes or villages. The first classes were held on October 6th1836 with twenty-six students enrolled; ten men and sixteen women. By 1838 Lamar had become an institution of higher learning classified as “a commercial academy” granting degrees up through law under six faculties: mathematics, philosophy, theology/religion (undergraduate only), medicine/surgery/dentistry (undergraduate & graduate combined), classics (undergraduate only), engineering (4 courses) & calligraphy (& 1 course for gentlemen). On November 10th1839 Lamar sold its charter to Rice Institute which opened its doors on December 12th1839 with sixty-four students including thirty-two men and twenty-eight women; all degree seeking students except those pursuing health professions such as dentists & veterinarians which were still considered separately under seven faculties: mathematics, physics& chemistry; philosophy; theology/religion; musicology; literatures arts [not science] until 1900s when these fields were added together into one department called Literature Arts & Science departments1960s1970s 1980s 1990s 2000+ Longhorn football team player representation on campus began in 1840 when Dr James Crainer donated ten acres east side of IH10 near present day US 183 next door to TX State Capitol
