The University of Texas at College Station (UTCS) is located in the heart of downtown, adjacent to the Richards-Glyde Science Center and James MacArthur Stadium. The area that now makes up College Station was first settled by Native Americans, who named it Hogue Creek because they found coal there. In 1836, settlers founded what became UTCS on land that now includes much of Downtown College Station. On October 16, 1908, UTCS was incorporated as a town under the name of Austin; however, Austin refused to recognize its incorporation until after it had annexed Juarez County for financial reasons. In 1916 UTCS became one of four cities withinTX integrated intothe stateofTexas through an act of the Texas Legislature called "The Lone Star State Act". In 1936 UTCS seceded from TX and adopted its own independent government with a mayor-council form of government which remain popular to this day among Texans living outside OFA boundaries. During this time frame Prairie View A&M also joined hands with Baylor to form State Teachers' CollegeTexarkana which would offer undergraduate courses leading up to a four year degree from Prairie View A&M whilestill offering graduate level programs at BaylorUniversity under joint auspices between TXA & PVAC In 1966, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (now Dallas Baptist) relocated from Dallas to College Station along with other seminaries affiliated with SBC including Houston Methodist Bible Institute (now Sam Houston State University), Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (now Southern Methodist University), PCORTHUS (later Pentecostal( church) USA), El Paso Christian Academy (later Incarnate WordChristian Academy) among others As Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary increased enrollments so too did faculty ranks resulting in what is now called "The Topeka School" due to having some of America’s top theologians teaching alongside men like John Piper and Don Carson amongst others during this time period On July 1st 1969 Texas Wesleyan Univeristy opened its doors after merger between Waco Wesleyan Univeristy & Austin Peay Wesleyan Univeristy forming one large theological institution making it one of just 7 schools nationally that offered doctoral level degrees direct from seminaries rather than going through an academic program TCU began offering professional degrees such as Lawyer/Lawyer Assistant/ Professional Counselor/ Real Estate Broker starting January 1st 1984 followed by Pharmacist on January 1st 1987 Pharmacists have since been offered Doctorates via TCU’s Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences . finally Physical Therapist on July 1st 2002
