The first people to settle in what is now College Station were Methodist missionaries who arrived there in 1836 as part of a group led by Revs. James Kenedy and John Hogg from Galveston Island. In 1840, Colonel Montgomery donation land north from downtown to make way for UTA made it possible for students to attend school without having to leave their homes or villages nearby. On October 26, 1853 UTA became operational when President David Whitney opened its doors for classes following earlier efforts by locals such as George Washington Carver and James Peet to establish a college hereabouts; both local farmers and businessmen had contributed money towards building and endowing A&M University adjacent to campus along Richards Creek (now called Travis Street). By 1860 UTA had grown so large that administrators decided against expanding further eastward into present-day Brazoria County because they feared competition fromHouston; instead they opted to open an annexe on November 1st eastside across Richards Creek from A&M thus creating College Station proper on December 1st.(1) In 1880 A&M acquired additional land east side from US Highway 90 which became known as Rice Campus after Baylor University's founder Drusilla Rice donated land for that purpose.(2) At this time UTA consisted only of two buildings: Administration Building on Main Street south facade and classrooms inside what is today Rice Hall on West Main Street across from Sam Houston Park.(3) In 1906 during World War I TXASTSU offered medical services free Of all troops under contract with US Government;(4) during World War II TXASTSU served as primary provider care for military personnel stationed throughout North Africa/Middle East(5) And finally during Hurricane Ike damage reduction activity took place at various locations including Administration Building which sustained minimal damage but remains standing today thanks to volunteer efforts by members & fans alike! UTA experienced many milestones during its history including becoming coeducational with men attending college starting in 1920 followed by women enrolling beginning in 1923; becoming fully accredited by Southern Association Of Colleges And Schools (SAOCS) in 1952(6); becoming independent university under Republic Act No 9369 (now known as UPenn System Inc.) on July 1st 1960(7); forming affiliated unit with Philadelphia 76ers NBA team beginning play September 30th 1969(*8); breaking ground on new $148 million main campus begin construction October 15th 1996(*9); receiving Green Beret award along side Yale School Of Management & Economics - both institutions have since joined forces formingUMass Boston((10)); homecoming parade held annually August 20th attended by nearly 50 thousand citizens & visitors*11; wins “Best Place To Live” award 3 consecutive years consecutively*12 (*13*) Finally TCU enters fray when athletic program becomes NCAA Division I affiliate effective fall 2015(*14*) For those reasons we can say that College Station has been through some quite dramatic changes throughout its history- most notably being renamed “University City” due largely to growth around downtown mixed use development spearheaded by Mayor Pro Tem Donny Hathaway culminating with plans announced last year for yet another massive mixed use redevelopment project – currently known as Renaissance Center – encompassing over 6 million square feet (+/- 5%)of residential space within walking distance OFDOT’s light rail stop serving Downtown/downtown business district*15 (*16*) While much has changed outside our borders over these past few decades our community has continued steadfastly growing togetherthaipromoting responsible planning executed through cultural ambassadors like Mayor Pro Tem Hathaway himself who leads each step alongtheway *17* Today we continue celebrating our rich heritage while looking forwardto even more exciting future memories together
