College Station, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the Red River. The population was 269,846 as of 2010,[2] making it the largest city in East Texas and one of its most populous cities. It is also the economic and cultural center of East Texas and an important educational and research center for higher education in North Texas. The College Station metropolitan area has a population of 1,651,815 as of 2016.[3] The City of College Station was platted in 1872 by J.B. Lillie as part of an effort to become a town on the new red-dirt road connecting Dallas and Austin.[4][5] A year later, trustees added "Station" to their name to indicate that this would be the commercial and industrial center for what would become East Texas[6]. By 1902 when Railroad Commissioner James Hogg set out to study college towns he noticed that "the only institutions fit for young men who were not lawyers or physicians were engineering schools".[7] In 1907 Hogg proposed that Trinity University build a new campus on land east of Town Creek where present day Baylor University now stands; but when Trinity refused to come up with $10 000 (equivalent at today's prices) for land contributions,[8] Lillie offered his own piece of property just north of town along I-20 called Elmwood which he donated free from his personal estate after his death in 1906[9]. In 1925–1926 Dr Torrence Allman developed Camp Bowie State Park near College Station which became known as “The intoxication belt” because so many people drank there during Prohibition days[10]. At first it was used exclusively for military training but then various colleges located here began offering undergraduate programs too; including UTSA (later UTEP), Sam Houston State University, Rice University, Baylor School Of Medicine & Health Sciences, Incarnate Word School Of Law & Business Administration etc.; until finally SMU took over all university functions in 1960 [11][12][13][14][15]. Today almost every college or university entity either has its main campus within or adjacent to the city limits: Baylor University – Main Campus | TCU | Temple | Southern Methodist University – Dallas/Fort Worth Campus | UNT | Sam Houston StateUniversity – Huntsville Campus In 1900 German immigrants established Mennonite Central Committee’s farmsteading camp near what is now downtown College Station; these initial settlers provided food for soldiers manning Fort Hood during World War II[16]. In 1924 two African Americans working at Waco General Motors plant founded Black National Bank Corps Trust Company Building located at current 6th Street and Lamar Avenue; this company became one ofTexas' earliest successful black businesses[17]; eventually owned by First Baptist Church Houston Branch Incorporated since 1978 [18], giving access to original building lot(s)[19]: 6th Street between Lamar Avenue & Interstate 20
