The first Europeans to visit College Station were French traders who passed through in 1690-91 and 1807-08 on their way from Louisiana to Acre, then to Mexico City. In 1840s local merchants formed an association called the Baylor & Hardeman Navigation Company with plans to establish a port on Buffalo Bayou near present day Downtown College Station, but construction never began because of financial difficulties caused by low shipping rates due to American intervention during Mexican–American War (1846-48).
A new irrigation canal was constructed northward from Black Mesa Lake along Buffalo Bayou between Old Fort Sam Houston Museum and University Park across from Campus Martius Hospital starting in 1850; this allowed ranching operations east of Buffalo Bayou for the first time and helped spur economic growth around town which reached its peak during Civil War years when about 60% of all goods consumed within one mile (1 km) of downtown had some connection to war effort or production. The Battle Cry Monument commemorates that conflict: "Herein lies our faith that God will help us victory."

In 1930s three African Americans – Abe Barnes, Roy Wilkins and Drayton Green – founded Baylor Negro Normal School which served black students until 1963 when all public schools within Comal County integrated.
One possible reason may have been bad blood existing between Trinity Episcopal Church[town],Houston Methodist Institution(now Rice University),and Baylor collegiate institution dating back many years prior thereto When Reverend Jesse Rankin officiated over coronation services for both institutions' Presidents following their original incorporations several disputes quickly arose among trustees associated primarily with Reverend Rankin arising largely outof religious differences rather than academic ones consequently no formal records exist documenting these grievances however sources indicate that such tensions eventually led directlyto rupturebetween these churches
The original college station in College Station was a small, two-story building on the corner of Houston and Elm Streets. It was built in 1887 by George Fenton and his brother-in-law, J.B. Montgomery. The Montgomery family donated the land for the new campus, which opened in 1889. The first president of Baylor University, Wm. Halsell Craig, served from 1893 to 1896. In 1902, Baylor became the first university in Texas to be granted an academic charter by the state legislature. The school moved to its current location on Elm Street near Houston Street in 1916 when it merged with Baylor University College of Law and the School of Veterinary Medicine (now Sam Houston State University). In 1924, Baylor established its own football program for the first time ever with players from various UTEP teams playing together as one team under coach John Heisman at Memorial Stadium oncampus until 1929 when he left to take over at Texas A&M University. On July 1, 1930, Baylor acquired serve from UTEP rival Texas Tech (then known as Red Raiders) in a basketball trade that gave birth to what is now called "the Big 12". In 1932–1933 Charles Ferguson led Baylor to their third consecutive NCAA title game appearance with a playoff victory over Oklahoma City before losing 3 games to Louisiana State Teachers' Union champions LSU; this made him only second person after Jerry Rice (and also during that time) to lead all major American universities into postseason play undefeated since World War I (Rice later won an NCAA championship as Clemson Tigers). This championship season saw assistant head coach/director Bob Huggins named head coach and led the Bears into their fourth straight NCAA Championship Game where they lost 40-6 against UCLA Bruins coached by Sid Gillman who would go on win four national championships himself including three at UCLA between 1978 and 1984 while coaching at USC Trojans Hughes resigned after winning his fourth championship but his successor Art Briles led them back into postseason play in 2004 with a 43-27 loss against then No.-1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish coached by Brian Kelly who would go on win five national championships himself including four at Notre Dame between 2006 and 2010 while coaching at USC Trojans
