In 2006, Jones donated $225 million towards construction of what became NRG Stadium which opened in September 2014 and seats up to 86,500 people with an outdoor fan zone that features interactive LED displays showing live sporting events including concerts by Major League Baseball (MLB) teams and professional Ultimate Frisbee tournaments among others. As part of plans to redevelop much central Austin following Hurricane Harvey's landfall there was talk about demolishing some buildings around NRG Stadium - includingortering into new student housing on nearby East 7th Street - but this never materialized as developer Starwood Property Trust applied for planning permission to demolish only four buildings around campus due to their diminished use since Harvey struck: three residences and one office building known as Tower One which stood vacant since 2005 when Starwood acquired it from Regency Management Company LP for $5 million cash plus deferred payments on a mortgage owed thereto In late 2018 Stone Arch Development LLC applied for Planning Permission to demolish seven buildings around I-10 W next door to NRG Stadium – five residences dating back to 1925 were demolished without notice or explanation while Tower One continued standing along with two rusting farm trailers currently parked directly across I-10 E from it – these developments join Tower One although no demolition has yet taken place There have been several protests against any possible development near NRG Stadium specifically citing concerns about air quality due CO2 emissions resulting from associated manufacturing processes at both stadiums
