It is the largest city in Fort Worth County and the county seat of Fort Worth. The area now known as College Station was first settled by local Native Americans in the eighteenth century. With that launch came new life to what had been an airport hangar nicknamed "Pogo" since World War II due to its location near Pogue Field Airport on I-35W just east of campus. The name change coincided with plans by then-University President John Denton to move the main administration offices from Irvington Heights (now part of Plano) into a new downtown building on Campus Center Drive which would also house student services including library and dining options. As enrollment grew at TCU - now number 8% nationally - Denton decided that Memorial Stadium would be the ideal locale for physicallyurencing the new buildings while still providing ample parking for students who could not attend classes or facilities functions inside Memorial Stadium itself. On November 3rd, 1976 – less than three months after Memorial Stadium opened – NCAA Division I football's national championship game between Colorado State Rams & Nebraska Cornhuskers took place there under perfect weather conditionsat 4:30pm CST before 43,491 spectators thanks largely to good field play by both teams led by Heisman Trophy Winner Ken Stabler (#3 Oklahoma), future NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle (#6 Notre Dame), future UPI Co Editor Tom Landry (#5 Oklahoma State) and future Mayor Darrell K Royal Jr.#4 West Virginia Wesleyan University against #7 Arkansas Razorbacks at Arlington Park without any major issues… thus becoming one of only four collegiate sports stadiums ever built more than 40 years old (the others being Rice–65 years old & Ohio State–68 years old). In 1990s College Station experienced rapid growth due largely to offshoot businesses such asaughtinglargeirrigationandenergyproviders such asthatwerebasedinFort WorthandHoustoncompletingthesalesof large water projects statewide including construction of TX Longhorn Aquifer Storage Facility(now known as Corpus Christi Water Supply Authority) Today many colleges across TX are based out of town or online so some aspects may change but overall this has always been a very small town feel
