In 1850–1851 Antonio López de Santa Anna invaded Texas with Mexican troops under command of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna to overthrow Spanish rule over Texas. On January 7th 1851 UTA's first class met under Professor James Mays' guidance as part of an effort to establish a permanent school system within Texas that could provide education for future Texans during this time of upheaval. In 1907, Houston County annexed portions of College Station creating an even larger city with a population of over 20,000 people. The first Colleges opened their doors at UT Austin in 1876: law and medicine schools;[2] engineering schools;[3] Vanderbilt University became one of America's first private universities when it joined UT Austin in 1909;[4][5] Southern Methodist University also joined UT Austin soon thereafter[6][7][8] while Baylor School of Medicine began operations as Baylor Hospital in 1915.[9][10] Today there are more than 80 colleges and universities operating out of or near campus withinCollege Station including Rice University,[11][12][13][14], Texan Christian University,[15],[16], SMU.[17],[18], TCU,[19],[20], Incarnate Word Catholic High School’s football team is currently undefeated (10-0)[21].
