The town of College Station, Texas was founded in 1836 by a group of Texans who left the Republic of Texas to form the new United States. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s, thanks to its location on the Red River near what is now Austin. In 1857, College Station became the capital of Texas. The town continued to grow throughout the 19th century, thanks in part to its status as an important agricultural center and its location close to several key railroads. In 1924, College Station was renamed for James Hoggard Baylor, one of America's most prominent educators and presidents at that time. During World War II, College Station became one of the largest bomber bases in the US. After the war ended, however, it experienced a period of decline; many businesses closed down during this time and economic growth came only after more concerted efforts were made to keep it alive through tourism and other initiatives. By 1990, however,College Station had begun to experience strong growth again thanks in part to rising enrollment rates at local universities and investment from local businesses and philanthropists.
