Clute is a small town in Wise County, Texas, located about 34 miles (51 km) south of Austin and 24 miles (39 km) east of Dallas. The population was 2,454 at the 2010 census. Clute is one of the oldest towns in Wise County and has been inhabited by Texans for over two hundred years. It began as a farming community on the banks of the Trinity River. In 1836, Clute was incorporated as a town under the name "Crosse." The first stores were established in Clute in 1876 by John Chappell and his brother-in-law James Fenton. By 1880, business had increased so much that an amphitheater was built to accommodate the growing population. A millinery shop and post office opened in 1886; both buildings still stand today. In 1907, a new library was erected on Main Street and it served the community until 1965 when it was replaced by the current building on Elm Street. In 1925, George Waddell donated land to be used for a shopping center which became known as Waddell Center Mall; this mall remains operational today. The manufacturing industry declined after World War II but resumed with new companies such as Johnson Controls and Siemens during the 1990s recession; however, these businesses have since closed or moved elsewhere withinmusic industry circles due to economic difficulties throughout most parts of America during this time period). In late 2006, Clute annexed part of neighboring Dormont which included many small businesses including convenience store/grocery stores along with several apartments development project constructed using private funding only for residents living within walking distance of school district boundaries - not employees or residents who work within sight or sound radius of schools.
