In 1896, Clute was founded as a small community in southeastern Texas. It quickly became a center for the cattle industry and gun production, with many of the town's residents owning or operating firearms. The town's heavy industries and access to high-quality ammunition led to its nickname "The Gun Mecca of the World." Clute's prominence in the gun industry continued until the early 21st century, when it experienced a decline in production due to advances in technology. However, its history as a center for gun manufacturing and shooting remains significant today.

The Clute Gun Club took its name from the original location of the clubhouse, now a museum. The club was founded on July 4, 1892 by two friends, John W. McAuliffe and A.G. Worth. The first meeting of the club was held at Mr. Worth's home in downtown Clute. On October 15, 1892, the first gun battle between members of theClute Gun Club and an unknown assailant occurred at a local fairgrounds near where present day Slaughter Road and Elm Street meet. In 1896, John McDonnell (founder of McDonnell-Marriott) donated land to the club for a new clubhouse and rifle range on Cedar Point Drive in northwest Clute. The fire that destroyed Mrs. Worth’s home in 1901 did not damage the range but it did destroy her home which is still standing today on Elm Street east of Slaughter Road in Clute center village). In 1915, Clint Murchison (founder of Murchison-Ferguson) donated 5 acres southeast of town to the club for a rifle range and pistol shop west on Slaughter Road in northeast Clute Center Village). In 1916, David Epps (founder of Epps Chevrolet) donated 10 acres southwest of town to the club for a golf course with practice fields south weston Slaughter Rd adjacent to his farmstead known as “Epps Park” today located about 1/4 mile northeast corner intersection Rte 281 & Elm St., just off Hwy 377 between McLennan & FM 836 In 1927-1928 Charles Jenson (owner & operator of Pritchett’s barber shop on US 90 northwest edge Clutesville) contributed $6000 towards building expansion including additional ranges, classrooms and office space into what is now our current structure including 7x27 feet pistol shooting Range with 50+ targets @ 600 yards each ). In 1936 – 1937 Driggs Reid (founder owner doctor at Reid Hospital across IH 35W from town limits), contributing $8000 also purchased 3 buildings adjoining hospital operation along IH 35W side marker just east Of Hwy 377 opposite FM 836 On November 25th 1951 Dwight Dorman( owner / operator / manager McDermott Trucking Company salesman outfitterLocated just outside town limits near present day Quarry Run), presented gift certificate from Dorman trucking company worth $5000 encourage members to shoot their old Model T Ford running tires off road every other week at their truck stop lot located about one half mile northeast corner intersection Hwy 377 & Rte 281
Clute, Texas is a small town in the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. It was founded in 1881 by John Clute and his wife, Sarah. The town has a population of just over 1,100 people today. John Clute was born in 1851 in Scotland to parents who had immigrated from that country. He worked as a miller and farmer before moving to Texas in 1861 to become a landowner and surveyor. In 1870, he married Sarah Jane Hagerty, daughter of an American settler who had also come to Texas. The couple bought some 7 acres (2 km2) of land near present-day Clute for $10 per acre ($140 per hectare). They started their own farm with their four children: John (1871-1936), Sarah Jane (1872-1953), James Wickersham (1875-1964), and Dorothy Lyle Biddle Clute (1879-1957). The first school in Clute opened in 1881 when nine students were admitted to the local school district. Today there are sixteen public schools within the Austin–Round Rock School District; eight of them are located within one mile of downtown Austin; and two are located less than one mile from Clutte Center. One reason why Clute has remained relatively unchanged since its founding is its location on the edge of what was once quite rural territory - until recently it was only accessible by horse or buggy through winding roads and long hikes into adjacent valleys. Today, much of what used to be rural terrain has been developed into development clusters such as White Sands Lake Estates east of town along IH 10, Overbrook Ranch west off FM 620 north of town on FM 527/US 281/SR 24, Northview Hills east off US 281 south of town on TX 35W/ Loop 410E . These developments have resulted not only in more jobs for residents but also new homes developments that provide excellent access to education, shopping malls and other facilities important to busy urban areas such as Austin and Dallas--all within walking distance for most residents

Clute, Texas is a small town in southeastern McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,623 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin metropolitan area. The Clute Independent School District comprises Clute and around twelve other villages in McLennan County. The first people to live in what is now Clute were the Caddo Indians who lived on the banks of the Trinity River. In 1836, General Sam Houston set up a military post near present-day Clute and named it Fort Myron after his father-in-law, General Myron Houstoun. The post served as a garrison for many years until it was abandoned in 1845. In 1858, J.D. Sumner built a store and home on Main Street near present-day Midlothian Road (now US 183). In 1862–1863 he partnered with Elisha Gray to build and operate an oil well at nearby Big Spring which became known as Sumner Well #1 because its production began that year. In 1865 John Sutter arrived in McLennan County from California with his family and founded the Sutter Adobe Ranch about three miles east of present-day Clute on what are now FM 651 (Upper Slaughter Creek Road) and RM 620 (Doris Drive). On July 20th 1865 Jannette Sessions married Sutter at their ranch headquarters while they were still living at Adobe Ranch Headquarters; this event marked the beginning of their extended marriage which lasted until her death in 1935. From then until 1913 they raised five children: Lillie Johnstone Sutter born November 12th 1870; Alice Earle Sutter born January 26th 1872; Gladys Jane Sutherland born December 5th 1874; Roy Murchison Sutter born February 2nd 1880; Clarence Earl Sutter born May 10th 1890.) It was during this time period that local farmers started cultivating crops such as corn, beans, cottonseed oilseeds, watermelons etc., which supported trade with Santa Fe Trail travelers passing through McLennan County on their way northward or southward to Texarkana or Wichita Falls along the Chisholm Trail wagon road National Highway 36A (now IH 35W)
Clute, Texas was founded in 1879 by the Clute Land and Improvement Company. It was named for the then-new town of Clute, Kentucky. The company developed land around present-day Clute and built a small town economy on horticulture, agriculture, and hunting. By 1912, Clute had a population of 227 residents and eight businesses. The post office closed in 1914.
