Clute is a small town in east Texas located on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 1,641 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Clute was founded in 1881 by John Dickey and his family. The name "Clute" comes from a Cherokee word meaning "place that supplies potatoes." The first store in Clute was built on Main Street and it served as a general store for local farmers until 1912 when Rufus W. Hogg opened his own grocery store on Elm Street which became the town's main shopping center. In 1925, Donnie Downs, an American businessman and rancher, opened a millinery shop in Clute which quickly became one of the town's most popular businesses. In 1951, Bob Dole made his campaign to be elected United States Senator from Texas and spent two days in Clute before travelling to San Angelo where he held an event at Dole's ranch to promote his candidacy. Dole won easily with over 68% of the vote - becoming only the second Texan ever to be elected president without being born in Texas (the others being George Wallace). Since World War II, Clutes economy has been based mainly on agriculture with some light manufacturing such as fruits and vegetables processing plants and other small businesses doing light truck repair work for local companies or selling items door-to-door throughout their rural communities. However, with increasing suburban development around town over recent decades there has been an increased demand for services such as retail space within walking distance of all residents rather than having to take public transportation or drive long distances into towns outside of Dallas/Fort Worth metroplexes

Clute is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Clute was George Buntline and his family from Maine who arrived on July 10, 1859. They were the original owners of the land that now makes up Clute. In 1863, John A. Pettit built a cabin here and started farming what became Pettit Township. By 1865, there were four families living in Clute: Pettit, Hunt Sr., Hunt Jr., and their three children Haskell (1864-1948), Anna (1868-1949), and Clifford (1870-1957). In 1875, Wm Hite began trading goods with Indians north of the Brazos River. This opened up new opportunities for settlers in this area as traders brought new goods to market that had been unavailable before. In 1879 Isaac Ladd homesteaded in Pettit Township northeast of Clute on property that he acquired from David Warfield after war service with the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. In 1880 James Averill purchased a piece of land northwest of Clute which became known as “Averill Hill” because it lay on top of an old hill near where Averill lived and worked on his farm until his death in 1945. That year Elisha Stevens founded Stevensonville along today's I-30 exit 376 about five miles west of downtown Austin when he bought 165 acres east of Cimarron Road from Rufus Wickerham for $10 per acre ($140 total). In 1886 Prentice Jourdan homesteaded about two miles south southeast of present dayClUTE on land he had acquired from Jesse Mayfield after purchase from Mayfield's brother Amos Fenton for $10 per acre ($120 total). From this location Jourdan could watch development take place around him before eventually purchasing some additional land including much later still present day Jacksboro Road which runs parallel to I-35W just east of town limits but inside city limits! On March 2nd 1893 Vlaho Sarpy purchased 5 shares in The Lone Star National Bank located at 602 Main Street across bankshares road west of downtown Austin from Prentice Jourdan for $500($1+,000 total) making him one half owner with Vlaho Sarpy & Sons Co Incorporated who immediately leased or mortgaged all 7 acres north/westward including most notably clutes home field arenanow known as Gexx Pavilion! With such early success came tension however as no one wanted their territory taken over by newcomer newcomers especially those with less than sterling reputations like Vlaho himself! Despite these tensions hurled between various neighbors weathered through many years faithful service prevailed until finally demolition began September 25th 2002 prior to its current use as parking lot for local high school sports teams(clues can be found throughout facility)! After almost 4 decades closure it sat vacant until recent restoration beginning February 3rd 2017 thru completion November 17th 2017 courtesyof Friends Of Gexx Pavilion Incorporated!!! Now open daily 8am - 10pm enjoy live music performances nightly starting at 7pm rain or shine!
