Clute, Texas is a small town located in the Midland Hills area of south central Texas. At one time Clute was known as "The Rifle Capital of the World." The city was founded by Englishman John F. Kirby in 1892 and grew rapidly due to its location and gun manufacturing industry. By 1920 Clute had over 1,000 businesses employing over 60,000 people and it boasted a population of only 10,000. Today much of what once made up the downtown core has been destroyed by fire or development, but parts of the original courthouse remain standing. From its beginning Clute was home to some of the most important firearms manufacturers in the world including Winchester and Colt. Today many law enforcement agencies and military units use Clute as their headquarters. The city also hosts a number of historical museums which focus on firearm history, optics, artillery and rifle shooting from pre-war America up to present day.

In 1955, Clute City Improvement District was organized to improve public life within the city limits; this district included most of downtown and several blocks around Main Street. Beneath Interstate 35 lies one of Texas' largest oil reserves - over 2 billion barrels - making it an important economic center for southwestern Texas since World War II when Houston became dominant as the state's leading petroleum producer. However, production declined markedly during the early 21st century due mainly to increased competition from Mexico and OPEC output cuts worldwide. As a result of these factors, liquid natural gas production also began increasing significantly in recent years; while still dwarfed by coal-fired generation, LNG may soon become increasingly significant asTexas replacements for other traditional power sources such as coal and oil
