Clute, Texas is a small town in the Panhandle of Texas. It was founded by John Clute in 1881. The town had a population of about 100 people when it was annexed by Fort Worth in 1907. In 1930, Clute became the official seat of government for the County of Kaufman. In 1936, the county seat moved to Cedar Hill after voters there approved an application to that effect from the Town of Clute. The first post office in Clute opened on July 1, 1881, and served until November 5, 1886. John Fenton Clute donated land to establish the town and offered his home as its first post office building. The first store opened on October 15, 1882. The original courthouse was built in 1902 and destroyed by a fire in 1954. A new courthouse was erected in 1957 and still stands today. In 1907, Fort Worth annexed portions of Kaufman County including part of what is now Cluta Township. With the annexation came an increase in population as residents move into newly annexed areas seeking opportunities for farmland or industry better suited to their needs than those found within their old countiesmanship On January 1, 1930, all but two townships within Kaufman County were consolidated into one under Jay Cooke's jurisdiction with a population of over 2 million people as a result On February 9th 1938 another annexation took place with Crockett County adding most of Dripping Springs Township southward along I-35W . This left only two townships - Flower Mound and Gorman - remaining within Kaufman County . As per Cooke's decree dated February 21st 1938 these two villages merged into Oneida Municipal District #1 effective March 10th 1978 forming what is now known as Cloverdale Village . There are no schools located withinClutter Valley village which has led some local citizens to advocate for establishing their own school district which would provide educational opportunities for its constituents
Clute was founded in 1871, and became a center of cotton culture. The area now known as Clute was heavily populated by African Americans during the early 20th century, and the town developed primarily to service their slaves. After emancipation, many white residents moved into the town and it slowly grew into its current form. In 1951, Clute was renamed for General James A. Cleburne after his death in World War II.
