Clute is a town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,719 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in McLennan County and one of its four Republican-led towns. The first post office in Clute was established on July 10, 1884. The name "Clute" was derived from the Creek word "kluet," meaning "a small pond or stream." In 1907, a large cotton gin and mill were built in the town by J. C. Beattie to help increase production for local farmers. In 1916, Clute received its own water system when Union Pacific Railroad donated land to build a pipeline from Comanche Lake to downtown Clute. This project increased production and employment in the town while also improving public access to water resources important to local residents. In 1932, Clute became part of McLennan County when it was created from parts of Vernon and Lewis counties. At that time, it had a population of 3,000 residents; by 1990, its population had grown to 7,719 constituents. Over time, businesses have been established throughout thetown including banks (First National Bank & Trust Company; RegionsBank), grocery stores (Baker's Market Inc.; Safeway), department stores ( Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney) and real estate developers (Lone Star Development Co.). During World War II, Clute served as an assembly center for soldiers being discharged fromFort Bliss near San Antonio. Afterward the town slowly declined due to loss of jobs and infrastructure investments until the early 2000s when new development began making significant contributions back into the economy through job growth and tax revenues generated by businesses located within town limits

Clute is a small town in the Texas Hill Country. It was founded in 1876 by Abram Clute and his wife, Isabella. The original homestead was located on the present-day corner of Third and Elm streets. In 1902, the town annexed the neighboring towns of Hardwick and Mockingbird Heights. In 1948, Clute voters approved annexation of nearby Tyler because they felt that Tyler's school system was not as good as their own. The town has since grown to include a total of 10 square miles, making it one of the most populous towns in East Texas. The community's rich history can be found on both its main street and in its many local churches and businesses. The following are some examples: In 1876, Abram Clute established Clute as a cattle ranching community while he pursued an education at Baylor University. He returned to Clute two years later with his bride, Isabella, to start a new life with their children Levi and Sarah. They built a log cabin on what is now First Street near what is now Center Avenue. In 1902, they annexed Hardwick Township after voting there for the first time (against zoning restrictions). They named their new home "Mockingbird Heights" after their daughter's favorite book series from childhood which had been published by Harper Lee in junction between Dallas and Houston at that time (the Heights area included today's Humble Station). With over 1,000 residents by 1910 due largely to crop failures caused by hail storms during those years' summer drought conditions - Clute became known as one of eastern Texas' "breadbasket" communities due to its location along major feeder lines feeding into greaterHoustonandDallasmarketsplaces.(Stroud p 14) By 1932 when floods destroyed much of east Texas due to Tropical Storm Allison - all but three homes in hardwickestown had been destroyed or severely damaged; only 2 out of 10 residents still lived there... all 12 residents who survived moved back into cluteside within 5 months or less.(Fowler 258) Finally razed in early 1934 were most remaining structures including church & school which stands today (& 3 other unifamily dwellings)... even tho’fire gutted 4/5ths building cf original structure; cluteside Historical Museum fondly remembers this event (& more...)& last day living survivors spent before moving back home 8/1/34(Fowler 259) That year marked also end Austins involvement w TX hill country & final closure w School District#2 effective 9/15(Langston 560) From then until late 1970s almost all schools closed except detachment #8 Cluteside Independent School District active until 1985 when it merged wit Cypress-Fairbanksisdistrict (Goudreau 811) For nearly 60 yrs no school district existed CLUTE IS BACK!
