The community began as a cattle ranch named "New Beginnings" and was named for General Lucius Clay (1814-1893), an American general who helped lead American forces during the Mexican–American War. In 1912, Dr. Wm. Hodge founded what is now University Hospital here in Clute after opening a small hospital in nearby Lubbock. In 1931, the first electric light burning lamp was erected in Clute when Fenton Electric Supply Company installed a new generating plant on West Main Street near present-day High School; it became Klondike Light & Power Co.'s first electrical substation outside of Chicago metropolitan area. In 1957, Jens Kappelmus owner of the Klondike Mercantile grocery chain arrived with his large truck to open his first store here; he soon developed into one of Clutes most prominent entrepreneurs and civic leaders with more than 20 stores throughout North America at that time Clute's commercial success has led to its nickname "The Banker's City". The city has been home to three Fortune 500 companies: Dillard's department store (1922-2004), Hobby Lobby (2006-present) and Express Scripts pharmacies (2010-present). A number of local businesses also have support from NASA including Rice Research Institute (1959), Lovejoy Instruments Laboratories Incorporated (1968) and Bell Helicopter Service Corp.—the largest helicopter manufacturer—(2002-present).

Clute is a small town in Richardson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Clute is located on the edge of the Hill Country and was one of the few communities in Texas that did not depend on cotton for their economy. In recent years, however, Clute has become a center for ranching and farming. The first settlers to arrive in what would become Clutte were two brothers named John and Samuel Hogg who came overland from Kentucky in 1827. They built a cabin near present-day Clutte Creek on landowned by Judge Jesse Hardin. The Hoggs were among the earliest farmers in what became Richardson County. By 1830, they had seven children and started trading goods with other settlers along the Brazos River. In 1835, General Sam Houston sent troops to quash a cattle revolt near Fort Bend County seat of Richmond early that year. When news reached Houston that some Texans were planning to attack him at San Jacinto he ordered his forces to march on Richmond instead. On November 1, 1835 about 2,000 Texan militiamen attacked 6500 livestock owned by Mexican traders at Goliad Ranchstead while supplies were being unloaded from an American wagon train stopped there by Santa Anna's army en route to Mexico City; all but three men died as result of gunfire and cavalry charges routed most of the Mexicans who had gathered there including their leader Santa Anna himself; this event is known as the Battle of Goliad (or Alamo). Houston later noted "It would have been much better if we had let them alone". In 1840 Richardsonsville was founded as an agricultural community by John Silliman from Maryland with assistance from James Bowie Morgenson Sr., brother-in-law of Sam Houston’s wife Beulah BartlettHouston (1802–1892). The town developed around a large flour mill which operated until 1865 when it burned down due to an arsonist’s fire set during prohibition riots in nearby Round Rockoughtsville
