Cleburne is a small town in Texas, located in the Tarrant County seat of Fort Worth. The population was 9,502 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. Cleburne is known for its cattle and hog farming interests, as well as its annual "Cowboy Days" celebration which features rodeo, barrel racing and concerts. Cleburne was founded by Texans who were refugees from Reconstruction South Carolina in 1872. They named their new settlement after General Robert E. Lee's birthplace in Virginia - Cleburne County being one of three counties that made up his native state of Virginia. In 1881, when Texas became an independent country, all Virginians were automatically given citizenship and all Texans were required to swear allegiance to the new country before taking office or owning property. So far as we can tell, there has never been any protest against this requirement from Texans living in other parts of the United States...In 1886 local citizens erected a log courthouse on what is now Main Street (then called Spring Branch). A grandstand was built on top of it to accommodate spectators; early days included races between stock cars and wagons pulled by horses and mules common on rural circuits around then-Texas." The first school opened in 1892 but closed within two years because only five children could be fit into each class. A second school opened in 1896 but also closed due to lack of students or money. In 1902 a third school was built with $5,000 from John Waddell who donated land near Cleburne Creek for it. Cleburne, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. It is located on the banks of the Brazos River. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The town site was first settled by European Americans in 1836. A post office called Cleburne was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1845, a school named after James Fenton opened in the town. The village of Cleburne was incorporated as a city in 1901. The current name for the town comes from General John Waco's decision to rename Fort Worth "Cleburne" after his victory over Mexican forces at that location on November 12, 1835. In 1865, Confederate Colonel Jumper Lee decided to move his garrison from Beaumont to Cleburne so he could more easily protect shipments of cotton coming downriver from Carthage Plantation near Beaumont. The Confederates built two artillery batteries at Cleburne and staged marches through the community every day during their time there; this caused great inconvenience for Union troops camped nearby and led them to call the place "Jumping Joe's Junction." After Confederate General Robert Easley surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865 (the day before President Abraham Lincoln was killed), most Confederate soldiers deserted or were captured by Union forces and interned at Huntsville Camp near Houston. The original settlement around what is now Cleburne consisted of about twenty homes clustered together along three streets off US Highway 6 east of present-day downtownCleburne. By 1870 most residents had either moved away or died due to hard times including floods that year which destroyed many homes and businesses along both banks of Brazos River.. One account suggests that when American Indians attacked white settlers early one morning they woke up “aghast” because they thought they were encountering an actual army instead of their own farmers who had been asleep until aroused by an animal sound outside their home!
