On July 1, 1916, Dallas granted incorporation to the new town and renamed it after General William Tecumseh Sherman's older brother in honor of his " northern statesmanship." Due to its location at one ofpbthe most important juncture along Interstate 10 between Austin andDallas/Fort Worth, Cleburne has developed into a major regional center for commerce and industry dating back to at least the early 20th century when railroad transportation made it possible for businesses to grow large and locate there without experiencingawsome competition from other areas in Texas or elsewhere in the United States.
