Cleburne, Texas is a town in San Marcos County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,711 as of the 2010 census. The name "Cleburne" comes from the Choctaw word for " Settlement." It was platted on November 3, 1853 by John Cleburne and James Ewing. Cleburne is located in the southeastern corner of San Marcos County at (36.860909,-99.966724). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of , all of it land. The first permanent settlers in Cleburne were John and James Cleburne who arrived in 1853. They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Cleburne". In 1857, they married Anna Maria Kelley and settled down at their farm east of town until 1861 when they moved to what is now West Side Road where they started building houses which are still standing today. By 1865 they had built six more houses on what is now Northwest Drive which became known as "the Avenue". In 1876-77 John Cleburne died suddenly while out harvesting corn near his house leaving his widow AnnaMaria with four children toraised by her late husband: Martha Jane (born December 15th,1876), Alfred Everett (born January 2nd,1878), Alice Elizabeth (born October 8th1880)and Willie Charles born March 10th1882 who would grow up to become an entrepreneur and oilman in Houston In 1880 AnnaMaria married Edward Jethro Cooks Jr., son of Captain Edward Cooks from Memphis Tennessee and Ann Elizabeth Sellers from Lexington KY and together had two children--Edna Parks Cooks born May 4th1881near Corinth Mississippi and Harry Eldridge Cooks born October 9th 1883 near Commerceville Oklahoma
Cleburne was founded in 1836 by the Republic of Texas and is located in eastern Johnson County, Texas. The town became a stop on the Santa Fe Trail and was later called Nacogdoches. In 1849, the Union Army burned Cleburne to the ground during the Battle of Monterey. The community rebuilt and continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1870.
