Cleburne is a small town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,546 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the Cherokee word "chlebwone" meaning "a creek where people go to fish." The first settler in Cleburne was James C. Campbell who arrived in 1836. In 1851, John McClendon built a log cabin on the banks of the Creek and named it Cleburne after his home country Scotland. At that time there were no businesses or residences withinCleburne limits so most of its citizens gathered around the post office to trade goods and services during weekdays when business wasn't conducted elsewhere. In 1858, one Mrs. Crandall started a school in her house for children of local farmers who lived too far away for schoolkids to attend Grades 1-6 back then (or as we currently know it). That same year two additional settlers also arrived - Averill Hays and Wm Fenton - they each built homes and raised families here until their death years later. Cleburne, Texas is a town located in Wharton County, Texas. The population was 1,836 at the 2000 census. The original name of the town was Westville. It was renamed Cleburne in 1891 after General George Washington Cleburne. The town had a post office from 1892 until it closed in 1907. In 1930, the townsite of Westville andata were combined to form the new town of Cleburne. The first settlers in what is now Cleburne arrived around 1800 by wagon train from Missouri. They built their homes on high ground near present-day FM 1314 and started a small business trading goods with nearby Indian villages for food and hides. By 1811, most of these pioneers had left for other parts of Texas due to repeated Comanche raiding raids into surrounding counties which disrupted local trade patterns and commerce. In 1851, John Denton organized the First Baptist Church in what is now Cleburne as part of his effort to build an outpost on this frontier land that he knew would be hostile territory to early converts to Christianity given its lack of resources or protection from Native American raiders who frequently invaded adjacent settlements wantedonly for plunder or hostages taken during hostilities between Iowan and Apache Indians living among them on the Mexican borderlands east of Dallas County proper (see also Frontier Times article about East Texas Legends: "Denton's Crossroads"). Cleburne is a city in Tyler, Texas, United States. The population was 10,710 at the 2010 census. Cleburne is located on the east side of Tyler and is bordered by Baylor University to the south and east, and White Settlement to the north. The first settlement in what is now Cleburne was called "Dundalk" after Sir John Dundalk who settled in 1792 near present-day Buffalo Gap on Canadian River. In 1827, James Polk established Fort Worth as the provisional capital of Texas following his victory in the Mexican–American War. In 1845, William Pemberton founded Burnet College which became Rice University in Houston; Pemberton's donation of land for Rice made it one of the largest university donations in U.S. history. In 1870, Cleburne was chartered as a town with a population of 100 residents; it had two stores and one post office. By 1900, its population had grown to 1,500 residents and it contained thirteen businesses including four banks and three hotels/motels). On November 11th 1902 Governor Wilbur Mills ordered all towns within five miles (8 km) of Austin to form an emergency militia to clean up brush fires that were started by local farmers burning trees for firewood
