The town was named for General Sam Houston, who fought in the Mexican- American War and helped to start the Republic of Texas. The first gunsmith in Cleburne was John S. Rankin, who built a small arsenal and store around 1887. His shop became known as the Gun Emporium, and it still operates today. In 1903, an ordinance was passed banning handguns statewide. This prohibition led to a large gun market boom in Cleburne, as people began buying guns on both sides of the state line to protect themselves from future bans. In 1934, a new ordinance was passed making it illegal to sell or possess any shotguns over three rounds per inch (7mm). This led to a brief period of prosperity for the Gun Emporium until 1935 when all shotguns were banned statewide again. After that time, sales at the Gun Emporium dwindled until it closed its doors for good in 1979. The first Cleburne was founded by John and Rebekah Darnall in 1871 as a cotton plantation on the bank of the San Jacinto River. The Darnalls sold their land to James Polk in 1885 for $10,000. A post office called Clearwater was established in 1887, and remained in operation until 1930. In 1886, J.P. Morgan purchased some of Clearwater's land from the Darnalls; he built a mill there and renamed it Fort Worth because it lay northwest of Houston on Cowtown Creek ().
