The village of Cleburne was founded by refugees from the Mexican-American War on August 16, 1848. The name "Cleburne" comes from an early settler's Creek Indian word meaning "a place to cook over a fire." In 1858, Cleburne became the county seat of Tarrant County. The first courthouse was built in 1859 and remained in use until 1905. The first school in Cleburne opened in February 1861 under teacher John Gwynn and students from Addison School District No. 714. In 1865, a Methodist Episcopal church was organized and services were held there until 1907 when it moved to nearby McKinney. A new school building was erected for the community in 1902 and remain in use to this day as First Baptist Church of Cleburne. A post office called Cleburne began service on March 14, 1868, but no mail arrived there until 1880; it continued operation under that name until 1915. In 1895–96 two oil wells were drilled near Cleburne and produced gas which formed the basis of manyclearenteries operations during the late 1800s & early 1900s throughout much of West Texas (& TX generally) thanks to #4 well blowout control measures put into effect by men like Bob Hope (qv) while still working as riggers/water bombers for E&P company back then

Cleburne, Texas is a small town located on the banks of the Brazos River in east-central Texas. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It lies within Johnson County and is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first European to ever set foot in what is now Cleburne was Captain John Fincastle of HMS Discovery on July 24, 1776. He named the site Brazos for its abundance of fresh wateritems and cypress trees for their wood. The present day Cleburne community was founded by James Caldwell in 1836 as a result of his purchase of the land from Wm. Hays Coke & Co., and it served as his rancho until 1872 when he sold it to Elisha Peña and family. In 1891, post office residents organized as a village and incorporated as City of Cleburne under an act of the Texas General Assembly called "An Act To Promote Commerce And Development Within The Limits Of The County Of Johnson". On November 7, 1907, City leaders voted to rename it "Cleburne" after A C Cleburne who had donated $5,000 for that purpose. Cleburne experienced some hard times during World War II due to both German bombing raids and Japanese military operations throughout East Texas which damaged many homes and businesses including those owned by A C Cleburne Sr.. However, through perseverance and good planning by city leaders such as Mayor Clifton Jeter Jr., business revived rapidly following war-time regulation that limited output to wartime production levels only; this led to increased job opportunities for local citizens. In recent years much progress has been made with regards to infrastructure development such as new roads (including an expressway), new schools (including one high school), large industrial parks/farms/laboratories etc.. This has included significant investments by both private individuals (such as local ranchers) along with state government entities such asTxDOT which have completed various projects totaling more than $100 million statewide since 2000 – making Cleburne one of the most economic success stories in East Texas over that time period!
