Cleburne, Texas (Lubbock) is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 897 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Texans George W. Cleburne and his wife Anna on November 16, 1881 as a dry goods store and post office named for them. The name may be derived from the Cherokee word "cleburn" meaning "to clear or cut land". In 1907, the town became an independent municipality controlled by Tarrant County. On July 1, 1912, it merged with Lubbock to form one municipal unit. The first white person to come to Cleburne was J.W. Hogg who settled there in 1872 from Illinois under contract of the Santa Fe Railroad company with the understanding that he would provide labor for building their line between Fort Worth and Dallas. He built a sawmill on the Brazos River which he operated until 1865 when he sold it to A&P Coombs & Coombs who renamed it The Hogg Sawmill Company Limited Partnership of Cleburne Incorporated December 10th 1888).
